BABY ON THE MOVE

Baby looked around to make sure no one could see her and dashed down the driveway. When she reached the main road, she figured that she’d walk for a while to clear her head. All that mess had made her thoughts go a little crazy, and she thought she ought to straighten out her brain, just like Frankolin and Felicia ought to straighten out their house.

Where would the Sallys have gone? Why would they leave the house? Were they upset that they had been left behind? How would she ever find them? This was a big conundrum, probably the biggest conundrum in Baby’s life so far. She needed a plan. She’d walk for a while longer until a plan came to her. Baby did her best thinking when she walked. If she had been allowed to walk in school, she’d probably have been an A+ student, but she mostly had to sit in school, so she was more of a B+ student.

On her ninety-sixth step she realized what she had to do. She needed to go back to her country house and sit where the Sallys had sat and think like a dog. That way she would know what they’d done. She would curl up in a tiny ball and think like a small dog, and get down on her hands and knees to think like a big dog. The time had come to stop walking and put out her thumb.

She looked at her thumb. She stuck it out, for practice, and then folded it back into her fist. Baby had never hitchhiked before. She’d heard her parents talking about the adventures they’d had hitchhiking around the country a long time ago. A long time ago no one had had rules against hitchhiking. Baby thought that hitchhiking might be illegal now, but she didn’t care. She’d break the law to find her dogs. She’d do anything. She needed to get to the Sallys, and she needed a ride. If hitchhiking was the only way to get back to the country, she’d do it.
